THEMATIC WORKING GROUP

TRANSFORMING SETS

Summary of work

The group has three objectives: (1) generate a framework that conceptualizes carefull-justice in NBS from a SETS perspective to analyze situated ethical entanglements; (2) generate indicators to operationalize and assess carefull-justice within long term research-to-action projects ; (3) build capacity in this space by engaging and mentoring new and diverse voices. The outputs of the TWG will be (1) a peer-reviewed article based on global case studies in a high-impact journal such as Nature Sustainability or Sustainability Science; (2) a policy and practice brief for local decision makers, practitioners, and community based orgs.

Timeline

Phase 1 (June - November, 2022) - developing the conceptual framework

  • Workshop #1 (virtual) - Theoretical development of the care-full justice framework

  • Workshop #2 (virtual) - Operationalize framework and indicators for case study selection and analysis

Phase 2 (Winter 2022 - Summer, 2023) - paper writing

  • Workshop #3 (in person; February, 2023) - Launching the writing process, defining objectives, organizing case studies and writing tasks.

  • Writing process (continuous, virtual)

  • Workshop #4 (virtual) - policy brief workshop based on results from the paper We plan to meet regularly over the next six months to develop our theoretical framework which will guide the selection and analysis of the case studies. Over the summer we will identify dates and a location for an accessible and site-relevant writing workshop to continue sharing data and knowledge and synthesize perspectives in a working draft. This draft will be developed and revised over the spring of 2023 and submitted for review by May 2023. We will build off our empirical results to draft a policy brief on care-full justice in NBS for policy makers and practitioners. Additional outputs will include capacity building through support for conference presentations, joint teaching efforts, and an intentional engagement with the young career network.
